Strengthening Climate Resilience Agriculture and Water Management Practices in Kurunegala and Monaragala Districts -Stage 2

Strengthening Climate Resilience in Agriculture and Water Management

Monaragala District: Infrastructure and Community Governance In Monaragala, we've focused on fast-tracking tank rehabilitation alongside the necessary training and governance to ensure long-term success.

Accelerated Tank Renovation:
We made significant headway in vital water infrastructure renovation, completing 65% of work at Buttala Harigalagama Wewa and 50% at Wellawaya Uruhora Wewa, while initiating 35% of work at Thanamalwila Aluth Wewa. This progress guarantees improved water security for local farmers

Operational Water Management:
We established and fully operationalized Water Management Committees in Buttala, Wellawaya, and Thanamalwila. These committees received technical support and training from District Technical Officers, ensuring community-led, informed governance of water resources.

Building Farmer Capacity:
We delivered essential farmer training covering climate change adaptation, organic farming, and soil conservation. This included practical skills in composting, pest control, bio-fencing, and soil erosion control, directly enhancing the sustainability and productivity of local agriculture.

Community-Led Solutions:
We restructured and mobilized farmer organizations to ensure active participatory planning and tank maintenance. Furthermore, we successfully resolved three community complaints related to Thanamalwila

Aluth Wewa through timely stakeholder coordination, proving the effectiveness of our governance structures.

Kurunegala District: Innovation and Future Planning

Our work in Kurunegala emphasizes institutional strengthening, community awareness, and deploying innovative methods for sustainable resource management.

Securing Future Infrastructure:
We have completed technical planning, reports, and cost estimates that have been fully approved for three key tanks: Kapuhena, Batalagoda, and Midellawa. This ensures the next phase of rehabilitation is ready for immediate launch.

Innovative Resource Use:
We implemented pioneering community actions that turn waste into resources, including repurposing invasive aquatic plants for coconut cultivation, harvesting naturally grown cane for sale, and successfully utilizing fishery lease income to fund ongoing tank maintenance. Strengthening Local Leadership:

We strengthened farmer organizations through targeted financial and institutional management training, specifically for the Batalagoda Farmers’ Organization, building their capacity for self-governance and sustainability.

Community Awareness:
We conducted effective community awareness programs targeting schoolchildren, women, and youth groups in the Batalagodawewa area, fostering a culture of environmental stewardship across generations.
