Strengthening Climate Resilience in Monaragala & Kurunegala (Stage 2)
Donor: HOPE International Development Agency (Canada)
Duration: Ongoing (Started June 2024)
Lead Partner: SLCDF
Geographical Focus: Monaragala & Kurunegala Districts – Uva & North Western Provinces, Sri Lanka
Overview
This climate resilience initiative, in its second stage, is designed to strengthen the ability of farming communities in Monaragala and Kurunegala to adapt to the growing threats of climate change. Through tank rehabilitation, regenerative agriculture, reforestation, and awareness building, the project equips communities with the tools and knowledge to sustain their livelihoods and ecosystems.
Why This Makes a Difference
Sri Lanka’s rural farmers are disproportionately affected by erratic rainfall, droughts, and declining soil fertility. Without immediate adaptation strategies, entire communities risk food insecurity and poverty. By restoring small tanks and promoting regenerative practices, this project ensures resilience and sustainability for generations to come.
Impact That Counts (By 2025)
Farming Families Reached: Thousands in six DS divisions
Water Security: Small tanks restored to benefit irrigation and community use
Reforestation: Community-led eco-restoration initiatives underway
Awareness Raised: Increased knowledge on climate-smart agriculture & resilience
