Overview
The Women Empowerment Collectives Project is a one-year initiative funded by Palmera Australia and implemented by the Sri Lanka Centre for Development Facilitation (SLCDF) in partnership with Mahasakthy Women Federation and RDPO. This integrated programme operates across Kilinochchi and Batticaloa Districts, focusing on empowering women through the Self Help Group (SHG) approach to build social capital, enhance economic resilience, and promote gender equality.
By strengthening Women’s Empowerment Collectives in post-conflict communities, the project aims to establish sustainable local mechanisms to promote and protect the rights of women and children while fostering inclusive community development and leadership among women.
Why This Makes a Difference
In the Northern and Eastern Provinces, women—especially those from post-conflict and economically disadvantaged backgrounds—face persistent barriers such as poverty, social exclusion, and limited access to leadership roles. The Women Empowerment Collectives Project provides a platform for women to come together, learn, and lead. Through SHG formation, capacity development, leadership training, and livelihood initiatives, women gain the tools and confidence to advocate for their rights, strengthen their communities, and achieve economic independence. The inclusion of Gender Equality, Disability, and Social Inclusion (GEDSI) principles ensures that all women, including those with disabilities or from marginalized households, are supported and represented.
Impact That Counts (By 2025)
Women Mobilized: Over 3,000 women organized into SHGs across 36 GN Divisions in Kilinochchi and Batticaloa Districts
Families Reached: Approximately 4,800 families benefit from improved social, economic, and leadership opportunities
Federations Strengthened: Women’s Federations established and capacitated to lead local development and advocacy initiatives
Rights Protected: Local mechanisms developed to promote and safeguard the rights of women and children
Leadership Enhanced: Women equipped with leadership, advocacy, and decision-making skills for community transformation
Inclusive Development: Promotion of GEDSI principles and increased participation of women-headed households and persons with disabilities in collective action
To create empowered and inclusive women’s collectives across the Northern and Eastern Provinces that promote gender equality, strengthen social and economic resilience, and drive community-led development for lasting peace and prosperity in Sri Lanka.
