Together for Tomorrow: A Village’s Effort to Educate Its Children

In the quiet rural village of Egodakalugaha Vadiya, the absence of a preschool had become a serious concern. For an entire year, young children were left without access to early learning. Parents—especially daily wage workers—struggled to juggle child care and livelihood responsibilities.

Sending children to distant town preschools wasn’t an option for most. For low-income families, transportation costs, safety risks, and long travel times made it nearly impossible.

A Community Mobilizes for Change

Enter the United Self-Help Group (SHG), formed under the CREAM project. While actively engaged in community support, the group recognized the critical need for local early childhood education.

One woman stepped up to lead the charge. Backed by the group, she gathered data and submitted two formal letters highlighting the issue. The SHG rallied together, mobilizing wider village support and sparking a collective movement toward a solution.

Turning Vision Into Reality

Thanks to the generosity of Mrs. A.M. Iresha Sadamali, a 20-perch plot of land was donated for the preschool. SHG members, villagers, and donors—from both inside and outside the community—joined hands to:

  • Clear the land

  • Build a temporary preschool structure

  • Set up learning and play spaces for children

It was a 100% community-driven effort, rooted in love and unity.

A Dream Realized

On March 23, 2023, the preschool officially opened its doors.

That morning, 12 children were enrolled—right in their own village. Parents, SHG members, teachers, and community leaders gathered to celebrate a powerful milestone.

No longer did parents need to travel long distances or leave their children unattended. The local preschool provided a safe, nurturing environment for learning and play—right at home.

“We couldn’t afford to send our children to large town preschools. Now, thanks to the village preschool, even our children can get an education.” – A Parent
“It feels like a dream come true for all of us and the children. This clearly shows the strength of our group. With this unity, we believe we can achieve even more in the future.” – SHG Member

A Model of Grassroots Empowerment

This preschool stands as more than just a building—it is a symbol of community resilience and the power of grassroots action. Through unity, vision, and local leadership, the people of Egodakalugaha Vadiya transformed a challenge into a lasting success.

When communities rise together, the future of every child shines brighter.
