A Story from the Batalagoda Tank Restoration
In the Batalagoda Tank restoration, villagers transformed invasive aquatic plants into compost for farming and home gardens. Others saw value in rattan for handicrafts, while fishery rights were leased to fund restoration efforts. A true example of community-led innovation and sustainability.

As part of the Panduwasnuwara Batalagoda Tank Restoration Project, one of the key activities planned was the removal of invasive aquatic plants from the tank. During a recent Project Steering Committee meeting, members discussed a significant challenge what to do with the large volume of aquatic plants once removed.
Rather than treating them as waste, the committee, together with the farmers, identified an innovative solution. Drawing from the experiences of fellow farmers, it was shared that aquatic plants can significantly improve coconut yields when used as organic matter. Motivated by this, several beneficiaries willingly offered to transport the removed plants to their own gardens, covering the cost and labor themselves. They plan to use them for mulching and compost production to enrich their soils.
In addition to this, a few beneficiaries expressed interest in starting home gardens using compost fertilizer derived from the aquatic plants. This sustainable practice not only addresses waste management but also promotes organic farming within the community.
Another inspiring initiative emerged when one beneficiary proposed using the rattan naturally found in the tank to create handicrafts. Previously, the rattan was seen as having little to no economic value. However, with the project area located close to tourist attractions in the Kingdom of Panduwasnuwara, these handmade products now present an opportunity for additional income without any market risks.
Further, the Farmers’ Organization collectively agreed to lease the tank’s fishery rights to an external party. The income generated from this initiative will be used to provide meals and refreshments for community members engaged in restoration activities.
This story is a powerful example of how the community, through collaboration and creative thinking, transformed environmental challenges into economic opportunities while promoting sustainability.
